Eastern Manitoba is the land of the explorer, the river systems have been the core of life in the region for centuries. The indigenous people and first settlers of our land established themselves along these waterways, which had an abundance of fish, game, edible plants and other necessities of life.

Today, remnants and artifacts of the indigenous people and settlers are still being discovered by archaeologists and first nation communities. They tell us the story of our past and are carefully curated at our many Eastern Manitoba Museums. If their walls could talk, they would have a lot to say, all you have to do is listen.

This summer, get out and explore our past and discover how it still impacts our present by visiting one, or all of our Museums. As each new area of Canada was opened to European settlement, pioneers were faced with the difficult task of building homes and communities from the ground up. Daily life revolved around providing the basic necessities of food, shelter, fuel and clothing. Cultures are what make countries unique. Eastern Manitoba is rich with many diverse cultures including French, Ukrainian, Mennonite, Indigenous, and so many more. Immerse yourself in the activities, rituals, beliefs and values to learn about the ways culture influences our daily lives. Explore the Industrial Era

The Industrial Era was the transition to new manufacturing processes, going from hand production methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, the increasing use of steam power and water power, the development of machine tools and the rise of the mechanized factory system. If you are interested in learning about the tools of the past, then you’ll want to stop into these Museums:

Enjoy the Out of the Ordinary

Enjoying the history of Eastern Manitoba wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t head out to explore some of our more unique Museums. Explore a teaching convent that served as a boarding school for girls for 60 years, take in a sugar shack where, in the spring, maple trees are tapped and a fine syrup is produced. If you are looking for the unique, then you’ll want to head on out to these great Museums.
