Gardenton

Gardenton is rich in Ukrainian history and culture. The community features many historical sites within and around the areasuch as St. Michael’s church which is the first permanent Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church built in Canada and the Gardenton Bridge, the last wooden truss bridge in Manitoba.  Gardenton Park is home to a historical school house and museum, containing historic artifacts and costumes original to the area.  The park is also home to the Ukrainian Festival held annually each July, featuring live entertainment suchas Ukrainian dance ensembles, traditional cuisine and tours of the historical school house and museum.Many locals use the hill in the park during winter months for tobogganing.  Summer activities include canoeing the scenic Roseau River and enjoying a unique nature experience at the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve. The Tall Grass Prairie is home to endangered and protected animal and plant species and boasts a scenic nature trail to view this unique habitat and catch a glimpse of the rare plants and wildlife it is home to.Annually, the community hosts a Fall Supper, featuring delicious local cuisine, an anticipated event for many in and out of the community.

Stuartburn

This community, rich in wildlife and history, is home to the Roseau River and attracts visitors, cottagers and residents to take in the scenic natural habitat by enjoying activities such as canoeing, tubing and hiking in the summers and snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winters. Just outside of the community, you can make a visit to the Weston Family Tall Grass Prairie Interpretive Centre, 160 acres featuring the Agassiz Interpretive Trail which allows the public to take in and interact with one of the rarest ecosystems in North America. Check out the exhibits inside of the interpretive centre, choose to take an informative guided tour of the grounds, or simply choose to explore and absorb the naturalistic beauty on your own.

Sundown

Each August, Sundown plays host to the annual Gymkhana (fun horse show).  Festivities include Gymkhana events, delicious food and entertainment. Annually, Sundown holds a fall supper, popular with locals and visitors alike. There is a rich and full Ukrainian heritage within the community thatis captured within the multiple historic churches and cemeteries, which are popular points of interest with visitors.

Vita

Vita, situated along the 201 Highway, is a friendly community which acts as the central gathering location in the R.M. of Stuartburn.  Town amenities include restaurants, fuel/service and accommodations, among other businesses. Each July, it proudly hosts Canada Day festivities that include a pancake breakfast, parade, car show, music, entertainment, rodeo and food featuring a perogy and sausage dinner. The day is capped off with an impressive firework display at dusk, branded the“Best Fireworks in the South”. During the late summer months, a farmer’s market is held in town featuring local produce, baking and handmade items. Vita is also home to the award winning Ukrainian dance ensemble, Susydka, who have demonstrated their talent at Folklorama. The town has a curling rink and arena which host lessons, games and tournaments.  Both buildings are available for public rental and enjoyment.
