Everyone is welcome to this Anishinaabe Nibi (Water) Gathering 2018! Bring your drums, rattles, feast bundles and lawn chair. It's going to be a good gathering. Over the last 4-5 years, Professor Aimée Craft has been working with Elders and learning from them on Anishinaabe law, with a specific focus on water law, Anishinaabe nibi inaakonigewin. There have been 4 big gatherings thus far (Roseau River in June 2013, Whiteshell Provincial Park (Bannock Point) in September 2014, June 2015, and May 2017). The intention of the gathering was rooted in the idea that “water is living and water is life, in a spiritual and physical way” (Aimée Craft). It was meant to draw out Anishinaabe nibi inaakonigewin, attempt to better understand what it is and to work to implement the responsibilities that flow from it. Anishinaabe inaakonigewin is more than a theory, but a daily practice of a beautiful way of life.
The Heartland Rodeo comes to Grunthal once again and will entertain you and your family during the annual Spring Rodeo. The Rough Stock School is a 3-day event of in-class and practical training in bull and steer riding and bull fighting. Take in the Gymkhana, a great warm-up event to the weekend. Enjoy the mouth-watering supper special on Saturday then kick up your heels with a dance to follow.
After many years of not seeing the Roseau River Canoe Derby, it's back!. With the river mapped and mile marker signed last year, this paddling poker derby event is an excellent opportunity to participate and check everything out. Canoes/kayaks/tubers start out from Stuartburn between 9 am and noon. Must complete the 11km paddle to Roseau River Park by 4 pm.
In a celebration of fitness and the goal of literacy, Library Allard is holding its fifth annual Walk/Run for Literacy on May 26, 2018, at 9 am as a fundraiser to be able to keep the extended library hours. Runners young and old can take on this community challenge in support of their local library. It’s a wonderful opportunity to join the other walkers/runners in support of literacy and fundraising. It’s even better if you have planned for the event and know what you can expect that morning.
