In the heart of Canada, smack dab in the middle at 96° 48’ 35” – the longitudinal centre of the country in the town of Tache, only 30 minutes from the provincial capital of Winnipeg. Eastman is bounded on the north by the Winnipeg River, on the east by the Ontario border, on the south by the US border (on the 49th Parallel, north of the US states of Minnesota and North Dakota) and on the West by the Red River and Lake Winnipeg.

One of the nicest things about eating local? It is local, homemade. None of those big restaurant chains (unless you choose to eat in one of our bigger centres) and that’s soul food!

Eastman is easily accessible by road. The Trans Canada Highway passe right through us and there are major highways to take you to all corners of our extraordinary region. Don’t stick to highways though. Check out some of our smaller highways and roads that take you through a forest tunnel or travel in our prairie region where you can watch vehicles for miles. We even have little bridges that only one vehicle can pass over at a time!

Money & Taxes
The currency is the Canadian dollar. For denominations under five dollars, Canadians use coins, including the ‘Loonie’ (one-dollar coin) and the ‘Toonie’ (two-dollar coin). Daily currency exchange rates appear in newspapers, online and are posted at banks throughout the city. A federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5 and a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) of 7 per cent is levied on all goods and services.

Tobacco & Alcohol
You must be 18 years of age to purchase cigarettes. There is a no-smoking by-law banning smoking in all bars, billiard and bingo halls, casinos and racetracks that also applies to workplaces, restaurants, theatres and bowling centres.
The legal drinking age in Manitoba is 18; in some cases, proof of age may be required. A driver’s license or a passport is considered a valid form of identification. The sale of alcohol, including spirits and wine, is controlled by the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) stores. Domestic and imported beers can be purchased at the Beer Store.

The production, sale and use of recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018 under the federal government’s Cannabis Act, 2017. Travelling outside of Canada with cannabis is not permitted.
